The Green Deal begins during the autumn of 2012. This is when the Government introduces the Green Deal scheme in order to reduce energy costs and improve energy efficiency for householders and businesses in the UK. This is about installing and fitting energy efficient technologies such as improved double glazing units and cavity wall insulation.
Timeline for the Green Deal to begin
- June 2nd 2011:The Energy Bill’s Green Deal papers will be brought out at the Commons Committee stage of the proceedings
- 14th March 2011: The Green Deal instigators will bring out the evidence required of them
- February 2011: The House of Lords Committee will look over the new Green Deal after they have approved it, a report will come out including any changes that are to be made to the Energy Bill.
- 8th December 2010: The new Energy was presented to the parliament
- 2nd November 2010: On this day Chris Huhne first talked about the new initiative and how it will create more energy efficient rented properties. Landlords will also benefit as they don’t have to pay money towards the new technologies before they are installed. Tenants will have rights under the new Energy Bill to seek to live in more energy efficient properties, and this must happen after the year 2015.
- 21st September 2010: He also spoke about how “were all 26 million households to take up the Green Deal over the next 20 years, employment in the sector would rise from its current level of 27,000 to something approaching 250,000”.
- 1st September 2010: An article came out in the Times newspaper about the Green Deal and how the aim of lower carbon emissions was one of the reasons why it was brought out in the first place. Greg Baker said “radical, game changing, way of improving energy efficiency in all properties affordable to all. By creating a new market opportunity for private sector finance we will provide another major opportunity for growth and employment with tens of thousands of jobs likely to be created in the home insulation market alone by 2020”.
- 25th May 2010: Part of the speech discussed by the Queen was the “implementation of a green deal”. This was highlighted as bringing in new measures for improving energy efficiency for households and business properties in the UK. This included incentives to do this and also a ‘pay as you save’ methodology.
- 20th May 2010: “through our ‘Green Deal’, we will encourage home energy efficiency improvements paid for by savings from energy bills. We will also take measures to improve energy efficiency in businesses and public sector buildings.” This was the statement made by the Coalition Government.
The Energy Bills Schedule
- December 2010: This was when the Energy Bill was presented to Parliament
- Pre-autumn 2011: All those involved in the process were contacted and informed by officials of the Green Deal initiative to help improve the technical parts of the Bill
- Autumn 2011: Official discussions regarding the minor parts of the Bill
- Early in 2012: The more minor parts of the Bill will be brought in front of Parliament
- Spring of 2012: Guidelines for business and companies in the UK will be drawn up
- Autumn of 2012: This will be the first time that the Green Deal initiative comes out in the UK
